Conserve India presents an upcycled art exhibition at India Habitate Centre

INSPIRED BY HER EXPERIENCE OF WORKING WITH RAG PICKERS, ANITA’S RECENT PROJECT EXPLORES THE NEXUS OF ART AND SCIENCE AND HOW CREATIVE PROCESS ILLUMINATES, ‘WASTE AS AN ART’.

The Plastic Bag project by Anita Ahuja is unique in several ways. Ahuja, who runs Conserve India, an NGO that aims at fighting poverty through fashion, has used waste material like plastic, tyres etc, On December 1, Anita Ahuja will be unveiling her first art exhibition at 7:00 pm at Palm Court, IHC.

So, when the project— titled At War With The Obvious—opens at IHC on December 1, one will get to see a hand bag installation titled, Traffic, and several other art works made using waste material. The exterior of the installation is made from tyre tubes. One can walk in the bag and the interiors resemble that of a chaotic city.

The plastic bag project came to life in a flash-literally and figuratively. It invoked in her a luminal environment where destruction and creation, absence and presence overlap. The project – a series of paintings, multimedia works and installations examines this life changing dream and her journey to its actual counterpart in real life impact of landfill site.

Over the last few years, she has converted waste materials into fashion accessories, which are exported to various countries. All her work has been influenced by the philosophies of ecology and our social system. “I am concerned with a deeper understanding of our relationship with the world in which we are generating waste and the people who are involved on a daily basis with collecting and sorting waste,” says Anita Ahuja.
