almost a quarter...and

It feels like about 3 years of stuff pushed into this year so far.
The year started off with a bit of a health worry for me, so lots of this and that and resolutions to take it easier....trying to get that to happen
Our Creative Camp was looming and it was to be a time out for me- cook lunch for our guests each day, otherwise see how they were going on the various activities we had lined up and see where they wanted to take it themselves.
3 weeks from the Camp we get a phone call from the family in Delhi, Impetuous nephew has fallen in love and wants a love match marriage- a small scandal!! but it can be coped with as long as the marriage can be arranged fast enough before he elopes! Oh yes he is a dear bubbly boy but we all know he is head strong and impatient.
So it is all agreed- unfortunately it will happen during the camp and Praveen will have to slip away for a few days but there is nothing we can do about it.
1 week later we get a phone call from Delhi Praveen's lovely sister Krishna, the mother of the groom has dropped down dead. How heart sick that makes me.....and Praveen will have to be away longer because more help will be needed to organize things. Once the promises are made and a date set it is bad luck not to go through with a wedding and Krishna would have wanted it.
whew....and we have visitors coming.
Luckily we had made the 2 trips up to Bagru to order blocks for the group and pick them up before this and everything was in place.....
Our group arrive- lovely.
One, who had a pre-existing condition but had thought she was fit enough to travel found out her pre-existing condition did not agree, the camp started off well enough for her but ended with visits to hospital and an anxious wait at the airport to see if her airline had suitable staff to look after on the flight home. I am so thankful now she is home and making a slow recovery I am told....at 1.00am in the morning after a very long day and 10 hr drive to Delhi, waiting anxiously outside to see if she could go or I would need to 'do' something in Delhi I burst into tears when the support staff came out and said they could look after her.
wow what an adventure.
Drama aside many things worked out well and we learnt about a few things we could do differently/ better/ change.
I had thought the Camp was a space to develop one's own ideas with the facilities we had to use. I had set up a number of activities to seed this and make sure there would be some tangible results.
Hence the starting experience with Sanju and her Sujani embroidery, embroidered shoes, the carved blocks, the visit to the indigo guy, and garments stitched by the workshop.
I had invited Dawn specifically to share her experiments with eco dye and her book binding skills. Dijanne was kind enough to show some of her quilts and talk about stitch and texture and building a piece from an idea.
Informally there was much discussion about ideas, developing them into work, moving from one idea to another, developing a body of work with an exhibition in mind....twists and turns with techniques already used, how other things could be included.
Some participants already have ideas for coming back and what they would like to follow up- more indigo, using the workshop as a base for independent projects as being away from home with a studio to work in gives time for focus and experimentation, travel to other areas of  India to see even more indigo and stitch techniques, explorations!
A criticism was that we did not formally sit down and do some of these discussions....though they did happen?
More actual demonstrations should happen? hmmm still up to people to run with it.
I do want to create a space for people to explore...follow their own initiative but can see a little formality might help some to reach that zone.
So I think next time we will start with a 'meeting' of show and tell- perhaps just a brief talk about what one has done and what one would like to achieve during the week.
Make a list for those that need it of what they want to do during the week....I will write a few 'course notes' to seed explorations perhaps that will kick start things if anyone wants to use them....this time though in most cases that happened of its own accord.
We use the train as it is the fastest and easiest way from and to Delhi, it does make a Farwell dinner a little awkward so I think I'll add an activity in Delhi to give us a night at the end to have dinner and say good bye.... a session on discoveries and perhaps where it will lead?? I know I would like to see where some of the things that were started and talked of bare fruit.
Much to learn but a good idea worth developing further.

ohh yesterday!

Thank goodness it is finished, it just seemed to go on and on.....so many things to do all at once.
Friday so the day for ladies to visit the house, I was madly rushing to finish assembling pieces for ladies to stitch, electricity could not make up it's mind if it was off or on so things slowed down in my end of the job, at the same time I was supposed to be in the new village dropping off stuff and at the tailors trying to get them to finish work for me!!
Praveen is in Delhi with his kids for Holi, and forgot to tell me I also had to meet a man to finalize some hotel bookings we are doing for a lady visiting us, then going to see some of Rajasthan and the lettuce guy wanted a delivery!!!
All at once, all before midday...then there was posting, in the PM I finally got to the village -the road is horrible 30 minutes to drive 10 km, no joke. they are remaking the road and at the entrance to the village it was blocked because of this and i though i would not be able to get to my ladies.
NO bloody way!! after the day I had had was I giving up, so I took a risk on a track, drove around and around almost wedged the car in between a building and a wall and had to reverse for miles, almost ready to cry and miraculously I found the house I was looking for and a very nice cup of tea.
Stitching was wonderful, pictures later.....then leaving the road builders have advanced further down the road and I could not get out of the village!!!
Further driving aorund, and around....most people there don't speak Hindi but the lacal dialect of Mewari, can't get over seeing a foreigner let alone a white woman driving a car so trying to get directions was a bit of a stuggle....finally came across some of my ladies who prompty jumped in my car and showed me a way across fields and a very sandy road to get out.....
arrived home at sunset to find no water...Mukesh had left the tap running when we were getting lettuce ready for delivery [much to the joy of the pawpaw tree] and no electricity to pump up.....
Next morning now, water here now...nice email from mate and some pictures of her books and I am sure today will be better.
Going to Govindgarh today to see what Om-ji has made for us- the excitment of seeing how he interprets our colour schemes!
Madly rushing as I have to get a parcel off to Oz for my trading stall in April.
This was my nice start to the day and email from my mate Dawn and pics of some of her latest books. I love her work and how finely she can put things together, Dawn will be here with me next year, yes I am already counting the days and as part of her visit we are organizing a residential Books 'n' Block workshop here at the Pukka Studio

She is a master of rust....I must remeber to get her to dye me some more cloth for pants while I am in OZ.....it gives the most amazing effects....
Well today has to be easier [simply because it could not be worse!] and many good things will happen I am sure.
I have 20 finished bags on my lounge to have finishing touches put on them, first serviettes in to admire and waiting for tableclothes in a few days and shoes later to look forward to.....much to be thankful for.

tweaking, tweaking, tweaking!!

Isn't this a harvest to be proud of? My sort of grand daughter [Dawn's grand dauhter Belle really, but I get the occasional Granny-ji as well] is 2 and half and mad keen on gardening....this is what has come out of her garden just recently, all put in the basket and taken to Nana Dawn because Nana Dawn will help turn it into pasta sauce! There will be somne in the freezer for me to sample when I arrive in April....ohh and lots of warm cuddles.
It was merely going to ake me 5 mins to add a few pictures to the Pukka Studio page Books 'n' Blocks
when of course I spot a whole heap of other things that also need tweaking on the Studio pages....I think, NO I hope I am nearly there now....at any rate I am going to run away and do other things for a while my head is spinning.....
When you take a few minutes to plan, tool kits do not need to be large....this small pile of tools willl fascilitate hours of enjoyment and productive activity...

Website re-gigging...

I have been re-building the Our Pukka Place website [ which makes me realise I need to tweak Creative Arts Safaris and that I have completely neglected the Fiona Wright site- eeerrrrr, moan!]
It takes a lot of thinking to try and get it all to flow smoothly, hours and hours of typing, tweaking, cutting and pasting and I find I am developing RSI so much graoning now as well.
Then you wake up the next morning and think of a better tweak so have to go through and add it to all 1000 pages - aaaaahhhhhh, oh well a means to an end! Keep it in perspective, Girl!
As you can see website building is one of my least favourite activities although I am pleased as well because it reflects our new clarity of direction.
This week has also been one of lots of power outages so I have been dancing in and out of the office as the powers flow....we have had quiet a number of people checking out our new direction so I think we will have quite a niche in the market for what is on offer in India- wow!
Do take a look through if you have time, I would really appreciate knowing if you spot any glitches....I still have lots of pictures to add and a few bits of text in the Studio section but I think I am finally making progress....
Dawn Thompson will be with us next year running a workshop Books'n' Blocks following are some pictures Ihave yet to add, I wonder what she will make with what she can find here in India? I already have orders in with her for a programme folder and my own Flag Book....
I have been tempting Dijanne Cevaal for some time with my Khadi cloth and we are hatching a programme as well.....
Cooking week I have already mentioned, I am excited by that.....

The Flag Book- a fabulous display book for treasures

 Request from small niece....

I love to dream....happy day dreams to you as well, amy you make thema reality.

Jaipur- a flying visit

We started the day in a big way, Praveen harvesting the first radishes from our market garden out the back. Here radish is eaten as a salad vegetable and also chopped and cooked as a spiced vegetable [white part and leaves used]. I don't like it fresh but cooked it is great.....and we will be eating lots i the next few weeks as it is Praveen's favourite.
Our one Australian tree is lloking great, love the red that comes into gum tree leaves.

Baba loves radishes it turns out.....he was swivelling his head this way and that to see what we were up to and can eat a whole radish with out dropping a single bite....so funny

Then we headed off to Jaipur for more research...along the way we stopped for lunch at a busy small hole in the wall Dahba- the food was fantastic and sitting there I had a little contemplation on words....I speak full English and only small, small Hindi....in English I can relsih some experiences that in Hindi I am only outling....
the waiter in the restaurant was doing full justice to the idea of scurrying around, the dal was festooned [in a taste sense] with corriander....so yummy. the youghurt was bejewlled with crushed cummin and a pinch of fennel seed. H hint of cinnamon in the mixed vegeatbles as well as all the ususal suspects in a spice mix...
So much to learn taste-wise from that meal
Then to the dye man in Jaipur- how is that for a dye pot?
and look at their hot water boiler- all your childhood fantasies of a space rocket or what?
Checking out the wooden blockmakers....to see about the process of comissioning my own designs?
And the paper merchant -research for "Books 'n' Blocks" our workshop with Dawn Thompson in March 2012- keep an eye on http://www.our-pukka-place.com/studio.html for details as I write them up.
Lots more pictures of our dayout in an album on Facebook
Being the doting pet owner at the moment, here is Baba eating radishes.
He is so funny, I love the serpentine way his neck swivels....he is always hungry and camels have very long legs so that is a lot of filling up to do!
Hoping for a bit quieter day today, we have really been running, but we will begin dyeing experiments with the dye stuff we got yesterday in Jaipur so I am not hopeful. Right now it is make a cake for the hotel, fiddle with this an that, inspect my garden it is starting to look like a green fuzz [we have our walled home garden- lots of different things I can't get in India and we have our market garden out the back to grow veg for our hotels, give friends and sell any extra]
Got to drop out and visit the Juuti wallah and give him cotton thread to see how it goes- very excited by the prospect of new shoes and we might be able to take his work further afeild.
Have a good day- Fi

Exploring Govindgarh

My travelling companions- Praveen and our mate Gopal-ji....we are heading off to Govindgarh which is just up the road from Gopal-ji's farm...looking for a Juuti-wallah, that is a guy who makes traditional style Rajasthani shoes. Praveen bought a pair last year and they look really sexy as well as are lasting very well.
I need a new pair and this old guy is good...he is also just a short drive from our place [18km] and so would make a good excursion for people staying with us for a little time who fancied a pair of hand made shoes specifically to their size.....ideas and clever thinking happening here!
The perfect snack food to start- Indian junk food is so tasty and
nutritious- these katori are filled with a spiced lentil mix and yummy!

Our gentleman, I showed him a pair I have had for years....now days they use synthetic wool for the embroidery but I want cotton....it can be done....so we will need to drop back to him some cotton colours I like....my plan is to see how he goes and all going well bespoke a few pairs to take and sell in Oz at the Orange Forum....as well as introduce our guests to him....
A simple pair....so comfortable, stylish and hard wearing
The name of the place is Govindgarh that would translate to Govind's Fort....so I thought hmmmm where is it?
A bit of poking around revealed a very picturesque and interesting little village...
the old mandir or temple in the fort....
and this town has many brass makers....look at these lovely serving bowls and spoons....guess who will have some soon? and what a great little gaunt for a cooking school group? [We are planning to offer week long experiences at The Pukka Studio....stay tuned]
Camel bells- of course!
Into the brass guys place to see the kiln he works from, they are happy to show us everything....and for us to bring guests later.
 Gopal-ji and his grandchild
Checking camel food, it will be delivered tomorrow for Baba.....
a very good day out and today we have to head up to Jaipur to buy dye, meet the wood block carver, look at paper for "Books 'n' Block" workshop, catch up with a freiend re textiles and buy fabric....ohh boy what a day!
